Character profile
Mu Xiaokui is the daughter of Mu Tianmiao, head of The Order, and carries the codename Jade. She grew up inside The Order, and she and Zuo Shang grew up together. Small and sweet to look at, she is tough and decisive underneath, and she played a real part in The Order’s internal war. Her life was turned over completely by her father’s death and by Zuo Shang’s betrayal.
The Order’s daughter
Mu Xiaokui is Mu Tianmiao’s only daughter, raised inside The Order and deeply favoured by her father. She and Zuo Shang grew up side by side and were close; he looked after her in everything. Under The Order’s protection she had a girlhood that was, by its standards, calm.
The Order’s internal war
In The Order’s fortieth year, Zuo Shang set up Soul and Xuan Yu, and Mu Tianmiao was killed by mistake. Mu Xiaokui’s world came down in a moment: The Order’s daughter became a girl who had lost her father. Faced with Zuo Shang’s betrayal, she made her own choice out of grief and rage, and took a key part in the events at Yecheng.
Personality
Small and sweet outside, tough and decisive inside. Mu Xiaokui is no soft young lady: she has a coolness and a capacity to decide that go past her years. Her feelings about Zuo Shang are tangled — the closeness of having grown up together, and the resentment and incomprehension that come from her father’s death.
Appearance
A small, sweet-looking girl, usually in pink or light colours, carrying a delicate iron fan. Her hair is done carefully and she wears ornaments; she moves like something light on the air. The contrast with the cold, hard look of The Order’s other Nether Envoys could not be sharper.
Iron-fan arts
Mu Xiaokui fights with an iron fan, and her fanwork is nimble and never the same twice. Opened, it is a close-range weapon; closed, it is a short baton to strike with; and it can fire hidden darts out of the ribs. Her technique is light and flowing, which sits at odds with how she looks.
