Character profile

Mo Tian is the last lord of the Bastion of Mó, father of Mo Jian and Soul. He is one of the most storied figures in the Phantom Blade series: he took the Bastion and made it one of the strongest powers in the Wulin. His martial skill was unmatched, he carried the sword Mo Jian, and the whole Wulin was wary of him. In the end The Order destroyed the Bastion, and Mo Tian died fighting in its last battle; his family’s fate became the central tragedy of the series.

The years as lord

Mo Tian was the Bastion’s last lord. He inherited what his forebears had built and drove the Bastion to its height. Unmatched in arms and carrying the sword Mo Jian, he was acknowledged as one of the finest fighters anywhere. Under him the Bastion became one of the strongest powers in the Wulin, standing against The Order as an equal. His name carried across the whole Wulin, and heroes beyond counting stood in awe of him.

The fall of the Bastion of Mó

In the end The Order destroyed the Bastion. In that last battle Mo Tian fought until he was killed, and the Bastion went to ash with him. His two sons: Mo Jian drifted out into the Wulin, while Soul was taken in by The Order and became one of its Nether Envoys. Mo Tian’s death and the fall of the Bastion are the root of every tragedy in the Phantom Blade series, and the start of Soul’s.

Personality

Blunt, dominant, and every inch a hero. Mo Tian was a born fighter and a born leader: hard in temper, and more likely to break than to bend. He was warm with his family and merciless with his enemies, and even his enemies respected him. His death marks the end of an age of the Wulin.

Appearance

Tall and heavily built, with a hard face and a gaze like lightning. He usually wears black armour and carries Mo Jian, and he commands respect without raising his voice. He was one of the most feared figures in the Wulin; every time he took a battlefield, the other side lost its nerve.

Mo Jian swordsmanship

Mo Tian carried the sword Mo Jian, and his swordwork was blunt, dominant and without limit. His skill was unfathomable; he stood at the very top of the Wulin. Mo Jian is the Bastion’s treasure, and in his hands it did its utmost. His swordwork opens wide and closes hard, and every cut lands as though it could end the world, with nothing able to hold against it.
